Veterinary medicine is complex. Horses are fragile. Together they make for (unfortunately for those of us on the receiving end of the vet bills) endless story ideas.
Horse lovers are keen to learn about the latest research findings and treatment options. Welfare-related issues, such as my report on the measures being taken to ensure the well-being of the horses at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, help to ensure critical transparency in equine activities. And then there’s the challenge of putting a fresh spin on “evergreen” topics — fly control, hoof care, and the like.
The other challenge is translating veterinary terminology and jargon into inviting, accessible prose that’s easy for the lay person to understand. My horse-health articles have won awards for doing just that.
And: Writing about veterinary topics is not all that different from writing about medical topics. So whether the patient has two legs or four, I’ll deliver engaging, useful content.
