As a horse-crazy kid who never outgrew the bug, I was especially pleased when Young Rider magazine asked me to write about the skills needed to become an equestrian professional. (Hint: It takes much more than riding prowess and equine know-how.)
I usually write for an all-ages audience that comprises mostly adults, so it was a fun departure to target kids. It wasn’t hard: I keenly remember the joys and angst of horse-crazy childhood, and I’ve always tried never to forget what it feels like to be a novice, when everything you need to learn feels overwhelming and even intermediate-level horses and riders seem imbued with a casual greatness.
