One of my greater professional challenges has been becoming proficient at “backpack journalism” — producing entire stories, including visuals, myself. It had been years since my college-photography coursework, and I’d never before tried to capture the action of equestrian sports, often in less-than-ideal lighting conditions. Several courses, a number of books, a decent investment in camera gear, and lots of trial and error later, I’m able to produce quality images to accompany my stories, such as this shot of 2022 FEI World Dressage Championships gold medalist Charlotte Fry on Glamourdale. An asset is the fact that I have developed a very good eye for what is and isn’t technically correct.
